Ear infections are a common health problem for pets, especially for dogs that swim, have floppy ears, and/or have allergies. They can be incredibly uncomfortable for pets to endure, and not so easy for owners to treat. If you are new to the process, here are some tips on how to administer pet medication for ear infections.
Typically you will need to use a cleaning solution first and then a medicated ointment afterwards. Some dogs know their ears have a problem and resist treatment. Some dogs smell the ear medication and start running.
The first thing you should do to apply your pet's medication is get him/her relaxed. You don't have to get sedatives for this, as some vets might prescribe. Instead, you can pet them; give them treats and lots of affection. Be gentle as you have them lay down on their side, so as not to scare them more. It is important to have your pet lying down so that the medication will fall deep into the ear, and not leak out before it help the infection.
Once your pet is lying down, you can pour some ear cleaning solution onto cotton balls, and even a little directly into the ear, and clean out any yeast or debris that is in the ear, blocking access to the canal.
If you poured some solution into the ear, let your dog or cat shake it out. This helps flush the ear canal clear so that when you put the medication in, it can treat the ear directly.
The most difficult part is now over. Administering the ear ointment should be relatively easy now. Try not to touch the inside of the animal's ear with the medicine tube. This can be painful, and remember how sensitive the inside of your ear is. Squeeze some of the ointment into your pet's ear and you are all done!
The type of medication, number of treatments, and amount you are supposed to insert really depends on the actual infection; what type of infection the animal has as well as how severe it is. Make sure you check with a vet to ensure you have the correct medication and dosage information.
